PRS for stories?

hi there,

If you wanted to sell a music CD you'd
ask the PRS people for permission and
then you'd get a certificate saying that
you can sell a fixed number at a certain
price and you'd give PRS people 6.5% or
8% of the sale value. This money goes
to the copyright owners of the music.

If you want to make a film/video from
a book is there a simialar process or
do you need to talk directly to the
author?

I personally would never steal someone's idea or concept and try to pass it off as my own or refuse to negotiate profit dispersal.

However my fedup meter has been red lined for the better part of a year.

When dealing with creative works; (unless you realy bastardise the thing) often times it is less complicated to ask for forgivness than it is permission.

Plus a good lawsuit is great publicity.

erm, maybe you should read my mail again.

PRS, or the Performing Right Society are
the people who you pay in order to use
someoneelse's music. Sadly, it's not done
by 'Profit Dispersal' but by a fixed
percentage rate calculated on the MRP
of a CD (usually) in advance.

That's for music.

My question was is there was a similar
agency for written work, or if you have
to talk directly with the author.

I don't really call this stealing someone's
idea since you pay the going rate.
